For many people, there's nothing worse than the thought of a long train journey stretching out ahead. Crowds. Delays. Expense. Cold, blowy platforms in the middle of nowhere and the inevitability that a stranger will, at some point, wish to relay their life story to you, with or without your consent.

But this couple can't seem to get enough of Britain's ageing rail network. Vicki Pipe and Geoff Marshall have set their sights on visiting every single National Rail station in the UK. All 2,563 of them.

The first question that springs to mind is: "Why?" The couple said that they wanted to find a way to "cheer themselves up" after a depressing year in 2016, which saw greats like David Bowie and Victoria Wood pass away, as well as politically controversial events like the EU referendum dominate national conscience.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, they said they wanted "something bright and wonderful to look forward to in 2017". The documentary-makers, who will record their epic journey in a series of videos and podcasts, and on social media, said they wanted to "capture the current status of Britain's railways and bring them to life" and "do something memorable".

The pair are currently four weeks into the 14-week project, which saw them arrange a "flashmob" to visit Shippea Hill station, East Cambridgeshire, which only had 12 passengers last year. Pipe and Marshall brought a record number of 20.

The couple crowdfunded the project through a Kickstarter campaign, raising over £38,000, and began their journey in Penzance in Cornwall. Their last stop will be Wick, in Scotland.

Speaking to The Guardian, Marshall seemed to hope his and Pipe's journey might inspire more people to appreciate Britain's beleagured railways. Quoting Hunter S Thompson, he added: “Book a ticket, take a ride, explore the world. Do it by rail, because railways are brilliant.”
